TKR in Severe Deformity & Bone Loss

What is total knee replacement (TKR)

Total knee replacement (TKR) is also known as knee replacement or knee arthroplasty. The knee consists mainly of three parts, femur, tibia, and patella. These 3 parts are covered with articular cartilage. The Knee's total surface is covered by a synovial membrane which releases fluid for lubrication. When there is severe damage to this knee area, a patient has to go through a knee replacement.

When knee replacement is needed?

  1. Hemophilia
  2. Unusual bone growth
  3. Bone death due to blood supply problem
  4. Knee deformity
  5. Rheumatoid arthritis
  6. Knee injury
  7. Osteoarthritis.

A patient may feel difficulty while walking and climbing stairs. Sometimes there is knee pain or joint swelling. If medication and support don’t work then the patient has to go through surgery.

Surgery is carried out under general or spinal anesthesia. The surgery is for almost 3 hours.

What is the procedure for total knee replacement (TKR)?

A small incision is made in the knee area

The orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Girdhar Boyapati eliminates the damaged cartilage and bone and then places the new metal and plastic implants to restore the alignment of the knee.

After the surgery at the best orthopedic hospital in Guntur, the patient is taken to the recovery room where he/she is placed for a few hours while he/she is recovering from anesthesia. After they wake up, they will be taken to the hospital room or discharged home.
